Let's take a closer look at the Sony Xperia series, starting with the name; ‘Sony’ which officially replaced ‘Sony Ericson’ in 2012 - marking the end of the Sony-Ericsson partnership, and a marked end of Ericsson’s retail device business, and its beginning into the more lucrative carrier-grade and EOT business. This leaves us with ‘Xperia’ which was derived from the word ‘experience’ and was the first in line for the Sony Xperia series which went on to sell tens of millions of smartphones worldwide.
Sony Xperia 1
The Sony Xperia 1 was officially announced to the public at the annual 2019 Mobile World Congress event on February 25, 2019. It was the world’s first smartphone with an ultrawide 21:9 ratio 4K HDR OLED display, dubbed CinemaWide. The screen a 6.5-inch display with a 2.5D resistant front and curved-edged back glass panels resulted in a wide range of screen protectors being produced in a variety of finishes but most notably in a clear nano glass and Anti-glare film. You can watch a full review of the Sony Xperia 1 here on YouTube.
Sony Xperia 1 II
Less than a year after the release of the Sony Xperia 1, the world got its first glimpse at the Sony Xperia 1 II on February 24th 2020. The Sony Xperia 1 II ships with support for 5G and released on Android 10, now updated to Android 11 leaves us all with the big question of what’s the difference between the Sony Xperia 1 and Sony Xperia 1 II? Three key differences include; 1- the Sony Xperia 1 II’s increased battery power, 2- 0.46% faster CPU speed and, 3- 128GB more internal storage. The display is identical to the Xperia 1 and again we see a wide range of scratch-resistant, ultra-high-quality screen protectors for the Sony Xperia 1 II including front and back protectors and screen protectors for the impressive 24mm ultra-wide-angle camera lens.
Sony Xperia 1 III
The Sony Xperia 1 III was revealed on April 14, 2021, but wasn’t officially released until August 19th 2021. The Sony Xperia 1 III is the world’s first smartphone with a variable telephoto lens paired with a Dual PD sensor and a 4K HDR 120Hz refresh rate display. Available with 5G, the Xperia 1 III comes with a 12.5% increase in battery power and 4GB more RAM than its predecessor the Xperia 1 II. The Sony Xperia 1 III boasts the same size display and pixel density as the Xperia 1 II so if you are looking for a high-quality nano glass screen protector for your Sony Xperia 1 II take a look at our full range. If you are spending a lot of time outdoors using the impressive 12MP main camera then you might want to add the ultimate protection to your phone with an ultra-protective nano glass camera screen protector.
Sony Xperia 5
Sony Xperia 5, officially released on September 5th 2019 arrived and remains lighter, smaller and cheaper than the Sony Xperia 1 III, but also arrived with less display resolution, pixel density and battery power than both the Xperia 1 II and Xperia 1 III. The Sony Xperia 5 also lacks a 3.5mm audio jack and can’t support Wi-Fi 6 but does come in globally cheaper than any other Xperia phone. While the display is smaller than the predecessor you can get a lot of glare on the Xperia 5 so it is worth looking at Anti-glare screen protectors for the Xperia 5. Take a look at our full range of high-quality Anti-scratch Xperia 5 screen protectors that are available in Anti-Glare and ultra-protective nano glass.
The Sony Xperia 5 III
The Sony Xperia 5 III was announced the same day as the Xperia 1 III - April 14, 2021, and while it remains part of the Xperia series, it brought with it a lot of confusion as to the differences between the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III. The Xperia 5 III continues on the same path as the Xperia 5 and is lighter, narrower, shorter and cheaper than the Xperia 1 III. Pixel density, resolution and battery power have been improved on the Xperia 5 III but still not up to the high standard of the Xperia 1 III. The Xperia 5 III comes with a 6-1 inch display so if you want to keep your new Sony Xperia 5 III screen safe from scratches, cracks and costly repairs we’d recommend adding a high-quality ScreenShield screen protector.
Sony Xperia 10 II
Continuing its theme of launching smartphones on the same day, Sony announced the Xperia 10 II the same day as the Xperia 1 II - February 24th 2020, further muddying the waters on what the intended flagship line is. The Sony Xperia 10 II had a rough start with buyers complaining of battery and heat problems followed by an easy to scratch display but again the Xperia 10 II came in globally cheaper than the Xperia 1 II. The Sony Xperia 10 II comes with a 6-inch display, if you want to keep it clean, scratch-free and avoid a costly repair we’d recommend checking out the wide range of ultra-protective ScreenShield screen protectors for the Xperia 10 II.
